The ESDN Conference 2014 - The Finnish model attracted attention

The ESDN Conference 2014 - The international SD agenda and its impact on Europe - took place in Rome, Italy on 6-7 November 2014. The conference was organized by the ESDN in cooperation with the Italian EU Presidency. 67 participants from 22 countries attended the conference. The Finnish model 'Society’s Commitment to Sustainability' attracted a lot of positive attention during the conference.  

Finnish National Commission on Sustainable Developments Secretary General Sauli Rouhinen presented the Society’s Commitment to Sustainability- model and its progress. The model was praised as a pioneer. "We love the Finnish model," said one Austrian participant.

The ESDN Conference 2014 reflected on how the UN process will impact on the EU and national level with regards to sustainable development. Moreover, the conference reflected upon the role of National SD Strategies in the context of current socio-economic and environmental policy challenges.

Representatives of the French, Austrian and German Governments are advocating a Europe-wide sustainable development awareness week. This is an opportunity to link up the different countries’ existing national awareness weeks and give them a European dimension. Finland announced it will participate in the Europe-wide sustainable development awareness week on 30 May - 5 June 2015.
