Press release

Minister of Agriculture and the Environment Kimmo Tiilikainen will present Finland's model for sustainable development at a High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, which will be held at the UN Headquarters in New York next week.

The UN adopted the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the autumn of 2015. Finland will be among the first countries which, at their own initiative, report on their plans concerning the implementation of the Agenda.

Minister Tiilikainen, who is Deputy Secretary-General of the National Commission on Sustainable Development, will speak at the event on Tuesday, 19 July.  In addition to the promotion of the Agenda 2030, there will be discussion on Finland's Commitment to Sustainable Development, which is a unique means of inclusion even in global terms. The UN has already paid much attention to this model, in which companies, other organisations and individual citizens can make their own commitment to promote sustainable development in a certain section of society and report on its materialisation.

The implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was launched at the beginning of this year, and its progress will be monitored and evaluated at global, regional and national levels. In this first follow-up and review meeting in New York, 22 countries will tell about their work, share their best practices and exchange ideas concerning possible challenges. This year's theme is ”Leave no one behind”.

Finland will also organise events on the sidelines of the high-level forum in collaboration with parties that have made a commitment. They are the City of Espoo, Rudus, which is a concrete and stone building material manufacturer, S Group, which operates in the retail and service sectors, the Service Centre for Development Cooperation (Kepa) and the Finnish NGDO Platform to the EU Kehys.
