Lack of safe and sufficient water resources is already now a threat to people, ecosystems and economy in many parts of the world, including transboundary waters. Only a third of transboundary river basins are covered by proper cooperation mechanisms. It is therefore extremely important that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development includes a target to promote cooperation in transboundary waters at all levels.
Finland’s Minister of Agriculture and the Environment, Kimmo Tiilikainen gave a statement at the High-level Special Event ‘Catalysing Implementation and Achievement of the Water-related SDGs’ at the UN on 27 September.
