The Climate Policy Roundtable will hold its 14th meeting on Tuesday 22 March 2022. It will discuss the climate plan for the land use sector, which is due to be circulated for comments in the next few weeks. The Roundtable will consider whether the proposed set of measures is balanced and effective and how fairness should be taken into account in the plan. The Roundtable is chaired by Prime Minister Sanna Marin.

As stated in the Government Programme, during this Government term the land use sector will be even more closely linked to the planning and implementation of the national climate and energy policy. The climate plan for the land use sector is being prepared under the coordination of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. It will include measures to reduce climate emissions from the land use sector and to strengthen carbon sinks and carbon pools so that the effects on climate change will be at least three metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent.  The climate plan for the land use sector is being prepared in coordination with the Medium-term Climate Change Policy Plan (KAISU) and the Climate and Energy Strategy.

Key measures that have already been launched include support for wasteland afforestation, ash fertilisation in peatland forests and ownership policy decisions concerning Metsähallitus. Other measures, too, have been preliminarily drafted and prepared. These include the implementation of the national CAP Strategic Plan, the prevention of deforestation through various means, measures promoting the climate-sustainable use of peatland fields, and the climate-sustainable use of peatland forests. Another objective is to promote cultivation that sequesters carbon and the market for carbon sequestration and other measures that advance carbon sequestration and storage. The measures preliminarily drafted by a working group are based on reports and hearings, and they are backed up by the knowledge and experiences gained in research and development projects under Catch the Carbon package of climate measures.

The Climate Policy Roundtable brings together a broad spectrum of stakeholders from different sectors of society. The purpose of the Roundtable is to create a common understanding of how Finland can make a just transition to a carbon neutral society by 2035. With its work, the Roundtable supports the preparation and implementation of Finland’s national climate policy.
