The EU and International Cooperation

Global environmental problems do not respect national borders, which is why international agreements, commitments and cooperation are needed to solve them.

Finland is a party to more than one hundred international environmental agreements. The Ministry of the Environment contributes to the achievement of the environmental, climate and sustainable development targets through global and regional cooperation and bilaterally, e.g. in project cooperation.

The EU is the key channel for Finland to influence global development. In multilateral cooperation, including international negotiations on environmental agreements, Finland promotes its objectives and the necessary measures through the EU and can thus be a globally influential player. Finland’s strong and diverse environmental expertise provides a good foundation for this. As a rule, Finland implements the objectives of international agreements through EU legislation.
