Landscape management areas cherish cultural and nature values in rural areas

Areas can be designated as specific landscape conservation areas under the Nature Conservation Act. The aim of landscape conservation areas is to cherish natural and cultural landscapes and the historical features particular to the region. Landscape management areas are established in close cooperation with local stakeholders, such as village associations and municipalities.

Landscape conservation areas contribute to the goals of the European Landscape Convention regarding interactive landscape management and the role of landscapes in building a positive sense of community. The European Landscape Convention entered into force in Finland on 1 April 2006.

Decisions to designate areas as nationally important landscape conservation areas are made by the Ministry of the Environment. Decisions on the designation of regionally important landscapes are made by the Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment, based on proposals by the Regional Councils.
