The 12th Session of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services IPBES will begin in Manchester on 3 February. The session is to approve the Business & Biodiversity Report.

IPBES produces comprehensive scientific assessments of the state of biodiversity, changes in it and its impacts on human wellbeing.

The next Assessment Report synthesises scientific knowledge on the impacts of businesses on biodiversity and how they are dependent on biodiversity and ecosystem services. The aim of the report is to identify actions businesses can take to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Paris Climate Agreement and Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

The report presents methods for measuring and reporting the impacts of businesses on biodiversity and the related dependencies and for risk management. The report also presents measures by which the different actors in society can create an environment for businesses that supports them in reducing harmful impacts on biodiversity and strengthening actions that have positive impacts on biodiversity.

IPBES strengthens science-policy interaction in biodiversity issues

IPBES is an independent intergovernmental body under the auspices of the UN, similar to IPCC. The task of IPBES is to strengthen the science-policy interface for questions related to biodiversity and ecosystem services. IPBES supports and promotes the implementation of international biodiversity and climate agreements. It serves the international community, governments and societies.

In 2024 two comprehensive IPBES reports were published concerning the interlinkages among biodiversity, water, food and health and the transformative change. Earlier reports published by IPBES include regional assessments, a global assessment and a report on invasive alien species.

The reports produced in a process agreed jointly by the Governments and led by scientists create a long-term knowledge base for decision-making concerning biodiversity and ecosystem services. The IPBES Assessment Report on Pollinators, Pollination and Food Production approved in 2016 laid the foundation for both the EU’s and the national pollinator strategy. The Assessment Report on Land Degradation and Restoration, in turn, has served as the basis for the planning and guidance of restoration.

The publication event of the report will be streamed live on 9 February at: IPBES Home page | IPBES secretariat

On the publication date, the Finnish Nature Panel will publish a memorandum that explores the key messages of the IPBES report from the Finnish perspective. The Ministry of the Environment, Finnish Environment Institute and Finnish Nature Panel will organise a stakeholder event on the topic on 10 March 2026.
