International Resource Panel meets in Helsinki on 6–9 June
The top names in the use of natural resources and environmental impacts come together this week in Finland as the International Resource Panel under the United Nations Environment Programme UNEP meets in Helsinki on 6–9 June. The 20th meeting of the Panel has specific strategic importance: on the agenda are the update of the Panel’s strategy and work programme for the next four years and completing the ongoing research projects.
The International Resource Panel serves as a scientific adviser in various natural resource use issues, including a sustainable bioeconomy, circular economy and clean solutions.
“The work of the Panel consists of conducting analyses based on scientific research on various themes, which are then used to support political decision-making especially in the UN institutions”, says Lea Kauppi, Director General at the Finnish Environment Institute and a long-term representative of Finland in the Panel.
The Panel is composed of the world’s leading scientists as well as representatives of governments and civil society organisations. The Finnish Ministry of the Environment is one of the founding members of the Panel and has been active in supporting its work. The Ministry’s representative in the Panel’s Steering Group is Merja Saarnilehto.
