Press release

The Climate Policy Roundtable appointed by the Government will hold its first meeting on Thursday 28 May 2020. The meeting will be held through virtual channels, and it will focus on sustainable recovery measures in terms of the climate and natural environment. Background presentations will be given by the chairs of the working group on sustainable recovery Mari Pantsar and Hannele Pokka and chair of the Finnish Climate Change Panel Markku Ollikainen.

“Finding solutions to the climate crisis is the greatest and most important challenge to humankind. In our Government Programme, we have committed to building a fossil-free welfare society,” says Prime Minister Sanna Marin, who chairs the roundtable.

“Limiting the rise in global average temperature to 1.5 degrees means that emissions should continue to decrease every year by the same amount as they have now decreased due to the coronavirus crisis. This shows the magnitude of the challenge we are facing. We cannot neglect the opportunity to make the energy transition and structural change happen. The Climate Policy Roundtable brings together a broad spectrum of stakeholders, thus also serving as an important forum to discuss sustainable means for rebuilding society after the coronavirus crisis,” says Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Krista Mikkonen.

The Climate Policy Roundtable, appointed by the Government in February 2020, is composed of decision-makers from many different sectors of society. The purpose of the roundtable is to create a common understanding of how Finland can make a just transition to a carbon neutral society even faster than envisaged so far. The roundtable does not make decisions, but its work will support the preparation and implementation of climate policy at the national level. The aim is to increase the acceptability of climate policy and give different stakeholders the opportunity to participate more closely in the national preparation of climate actions.

The Climate Policy Roundtable is chaired by Prime Minister Sanna Marin and vice-chaired by Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Krista Mikkonen, Minister of Finance Katri Kulmuni, Youth Climate Delegate Sara Nyman from the Finnish National Youth Council Allianssi and Jouni Keronen, CEO of the Climate Leadership Coalition. The roundtable was appointed for the current government term.
