Minister Tiilikainen to celebrate Finland’s Nature Day
The fourth Nature Day of the year will be celebrated on 26 August in tens of events across the country. As far as we know, Finland will be the first country in the world to raise the national flag to honour the natural environment. The Ministry of the Environment, led by the Minister of Housing, Energy and the Environment Kimmo Tiilikainen, will attend various events in the Uusimaa region.
In Pitkäkoski, Karkkila Minister Tiilikainen will open a riverside party and take part in a restoration project by placing gravel and pebbles in the riverbed. A significant project has been launched in the heritage Karjaanjoki river area to restore the breeding grounds of salmonids.
During the day the minister will also participate in a programme concerning pollinating species at the Pieni Kylä organic farm in Nuuksio, Espoo and open the concert of the YL Male Voice Choir and Tapiola Choir at Mustalampi in the Nuuksio National Park.
“Finnish nature well deserves the national flag. Its beauty, diversity and the four seasons oblige us to take responsible action in climate and environmental issues”, Minister Tiilikainen says.
The main events of the August Nature Day are the choir concerts in national parks and fires to be lit along the coastline to celebrate nature’s beauty and variety. To end the day people will be dining under the open sky. The range of events during the day is broad indeed, and everyone is free to register their own events as part of the official programme at the Nature Days website. You may be part of the celebrations even in your own backyard.
On Saturday 26 August some of the main Government buildings and banquet halls that are usually closed to the public will open their doors and welcome people to join guided tours of the buildings. The Ministry of the Environment celebrates the day outdoors in the natural environment. The ministry’s choir “Ymmällä” (“Bewildered”) will perform at the “Sipoonkorvessa soi” (“Sipoonkorpi Melodies”) event at the Sipoonkorpi National Park in Uusimaa.
The four Nature Days in 2017 celebrate the 100th anniversary of Finland’s independence. The previous days were on 4 February and 20 May, and on 17 June, which also included the opening of the new Hossa National Park.
