Meeting of Arctic Environment Ministers and Biodiversity Congress in Rovaniemi in October 2018

Next year, on 9-12 October, Finland will host a meeting of the Arctic Environment Ministers and the Arctic Biodiversity Congress in Rovaniemi. The events are part of the programme of Finland’s Chairmanship in the Arctic Council 2017–2019.

The Arctic Biodiversity Congress on 9-11 October will be organised together with the Conservation of Arctic Fauna and Flora CAFF, the biodiversity working group of the Arctic Council. More than 450 participants are expected, which makes it the largest event of Finland’s Chairmanship. The Congress will bring together scientists, policy-makers, government officials, representatives of Arctic indigenous communities, traditional knowledge holders, industry, civil society organizations, and other people interested in the Arctic region to promote the conservation and sustainable use of Arctic biodiversity. The topics on the agenda include the implementation of programmes concerning biodiversity, achievement of the objectives, and new targets to be set.

The meeting of the Arctic Environment Ministers will be held on 11-12 October. The ministers will seek solutions to major environmental questions concerning the region, including climate change, biodiversity conservation and preventing pollution. The meeting will be hosted by the Minister of the Environment, Energy and Housing of Finland Kimmo Tiilikainen.
