During the Climate Conference COP29 Finland joined a number of new initiatives and boosted important initiatives launched earlier to promote clean solutions.

The initiatives published in connection with the UN Climate Conference will focus on specific important themes and deepen collaboration among countries on these. The initiatives can also contribute to promoting themes that were not included in the Paris Agreement.

At the Climate Conference in Baku, it was important for Finland to promote clean solutions and boost the energy transition through initiatives and declarations. Finland also joined the initiatives concerning waters and tourism launched in Baku.

COP29 Baku Dialogue on Water for Climate Action

By this declaration, the countries commit to using continuous and coherent means to combat the impacts of climate change on waters. The aim is to improve regional and international cooperation and strengthen the generation of scientific knowledge. The declaration also aims to strengthen cooperation in order to increase global water security and prevent disasters related to water.

COP29 Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge

The aim is to increase global energy storage capacity six times above 2022 levels by 2030. To improve the energy grids, the participants also commit to enhancing grid capacity through the global grid.

COP29 Declaration on Enhanced Climate Action in Tourism

The COP29 tourism initiative of the Presidency launched in collaboration with the UN tourism organisations aims to promote climate actions in the tourism sector globally. In the declaration countries are urged to take climate actions related to tourism into account as part of the national climate targets. The aim is to promote climate change mitigation and adaptation measures in tourism through e.g. more efficient use of energy, nature-based solutions, competence building and collaboration.

COP29 Hydrogen Declaration

The aim of the declaration is to remove barriers related to regulation, technology, financing and standardisation.

Group of Negative Emitters (GONE)

Finland joined the GONE initiative at COP28 last year, and in Baku Finland participated in the work to further boost the initiative. The initiative invites countries to promote actions related to the production of net-negative emissions.

Coalition for High Ambition Multi-Level Partnerships (CHAMP)

The CHAMP (Cities and Regions for Climate Action) initiative aims to strengthen the role of local administrations in the fight against climate change. The main purpose of the initiative is to promote cooperation on climate issues between the different administrative levels, including between cities, regions and states, in the planning, financing, implementation and monitoring of climate strategies. Finland joined the CHAMP initiative during the Climate Week held in connection with the UN General Assembly last September.

Global Carbon Pricing Challenge (GCPC).

The initiative aims to promote emissions trading through the pricing of carbon dioxide emissions. Work is done by sharing experiences and exploring good practices. The initiative was launched by Canada in 2021 and Finland joined it in Baku.

In addition, at the Climate Conference in Baku Finland joined the statements of the High Ambition Coalition, Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance and Ambition on Melting Ice (AMI) high-level group on Sea-level Rise and Mountain Water Resources composed of countries that support strong climate work.
