At Ukraine’s request, Finland will host a meeting dedicated to the eighth point of the Ukrainian Peace Formula, Environmental Security, on Saturday 19 October. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will deliver the opening address at the meeting, which will be chaired by Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Kai Mykkänen.

The online meeting will be hosted by Finland and Ukraine from Helsinki. Representatives of Ukraine’s political leadership will be in attendance.

The aim of the Helsinki meeting is to promote environmental security as part of the broader Ukraine peace plan. Finland’s contribution to the international cooperation on environmental damages is part of the Peace Formula presented by President Zelenskyy in 2022.

Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine is causing extensive environmental damage and may lead to unprecedented environmental pollution and destruction of ecosystems. Representatives of various states and international organisations have been invited to take part in the conference.

The event is part of a series of thematic meetings organised under all ten points of the Ukraine Peace Formula. Finland serves as co-chair of the working group on Environmental Security together with Germany and Bulgaria.

The meeting will explore how different parties can support Ukraine in its reconstruction in line with the principles of the green transition and sustainable development.

Monitoring and assessing the state of the environment are among Finland’s strongest areas of expertise. There are also many companies in Finland with top international expertise in measurement technology and monitoring the state of the environment.
